When embarking on a hair transplant journey, you will likely encounter a variety of medical terms and acronyms that you haven’t heard before. Understanding these key terms is essential for making informed decisions and communicating effectively with your clinical team.

Here is our comprehensive guide to the fundamental terms used in the hair restoration industry:

1. Graft (Hair Follicular Unit)

The word "graft" is the most frequently used term in hair transplantation. A graft does not simply mean a single strand of hair. It is a biological structure containing 1, 2, 3, or 4 hair follicles, along with surrounding skin tissue and vital nutrients.

Key Note: When a clinic states, "We will transplant 4,000 grafts," it means you will receive approximately 8,000 to 10,000 actual hairs, depending on your individual hair characteristics.

2. Donor Area (The Source Site)

This is the area from which hair follicles are harvested to be transferred to the balding zones. The primary donor area is the back and sides of the scalp (between the ears), because these follicles are genetically resistant to DHT (Dihydrotestosterone), the hormone responsible for male pattern baldness. In cases where the scalp donor area is insufficient, beard or body hair can occasionally be utilised.

3. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)

FUE is the foundation of modern hair transplantation. In this method, individual hair grafts are extracted from the donor area one by one using microscopic motorized punches. Unlike older techniques, FUE leaves no linear scars or stitches at the back of the head. Most advanced contemporary methods (such as Sapphire and DHI) are refined variations of the FUE technique.

4. Sapphire FUE

An advanced evolution of the classic FUE technique. While traditional FUE utilises steel blades to create recipient channels, Sapphire FUE uses ultra-sharp, smooth blades crafted from genuine sapphire gemstones.

Allows for opening smaller, microscopic incisions.

 Minimises skin tissue trauma.

Significantly reduces scabbing and accelerates the overall healing process.

Enables a much higher density of hair placement per square centimetre.

5. DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)

In the DHI method, harvested grafts are loaded into specialised medical devices called Choi Implanter Pens. Using this precision tool, the surgeon can implant the follicle directly into the scalp without needing to pre-cut holes or channels.

Channel creation and implantation happen simultaneously.

Minimises the time hair follicles spend outside the body, ensuring a higher graft survival rate.

Allows for seamless integration between existing hairs without damaging nearby follicles.

Often preferred by patients seeking a no-shave hair transplant.

6. Alopecia

The medical term is used broadly to describe hair loss and baldness. It includes various types, such as Androgenetic Alopecia (male or female pattern baldness) and Alopecia Areata (an autoimmune condition causing patchy loss). Hair transplant surgeries are primarily performed to address permanent, genetic Androgenetic Alopecia.

7. Hairline Design

The most critical aesthetic phase that determines the naturalness and success of your results. It involves mapping the frontal boundary where the forehead meets the hair, utilizing the "golden ratio" rules customized to your facial features, structure, and age. An expertly designed hairline ensures that your transplant remains completely undetectable.

8. Shock Loss

A temporary and entirely natural shedding process that occurs between the 2nd week and 2nd month post-operation. The newly transplanted hair shafts shed as the roots transition into a resting phase. While this stage often causes anxiety for patients, the hair follicles remain healthy beneath the skin, and permanent, healthy hair will begin to grow from the 3rd month onwards
